TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's track & field team will send
Vilde Henriksen,
Laura Nicholson,
Mercy Kinyanjui, and
Lou Trois to Lexington, Ky., to compete in the 2024 NCAA East Regional Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the University of Kentucky's Outdoor Track & Field Complex on Wednesday-Saturday, May 22-25.
The Rockets' first day of competition will be on Thursday, May 23 when Nicholson and Trois will run the 1,500m prelims and Kinyanjui will end the day with the 10K. Should Nicholson or Trois qualify, the pair will run in Saturday's 1500m finals. Henriksen will run on Saturday evening in the 3,000m steeplechase and Kinyanjui will end the day with the 5K.
In each event, the top 12 finishers will join the top 12 finishers from the West Regional Championships (Fayetteville, Ark.) to compete in a field of 24 participants at the national championship meet. The 2024 NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships will be held Wednesday-Saturday, June 5-8 at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore.
Henriksen, Nicholson, and Kinyanjui all qualified for their respective events at the Wake Forest Invite on April 19. Nicholson, ranked 13
th in the nation, ran the second-fastest time in program history in the 1,500m (4:11.65) to save her spot in Lexington. Kinyanjui qualified for the 10K (33:28.22) with the second-fastest time in UT history at 39th-fastest in the country this year and also ran the 5K. Henriksen also ranks 13
th in the country for her 3,000m steeplechase time of 10:03.34. Trois qualified for the 1,500m at the Virginia High Performance meet on April 28 (4:18.79).
At the 2023 East Regional Championships,
Madeline Vining and
Joy Chirchir finished 32
nd and 39
th, respectively, in the 10,000m race. Under fifth-year head coach
Andrea Grove-McDonough, 16 student-athletes have run in the East Regional prelims and three distance runners have qualified for the national championships.
Faith Linga, who finished 21st in the 10K at the 2022 NCAA Championships, was the last Rocket to run at the national meet.
