TOLEDO, Ohio – Former Rocket great
Laura Nicholson will represent Team Ireland in the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, Japan on Sept. 13-21. Nicholson is the first female Rocket to compete in the World Athletics Championships.
Nicholson will see action in the women's 1500m event for Team Ireland. She qualified for the World Championship after becoming the Irish National Champion in the 1500m with a final time of 4:13.32.
Competition for Nicholson will begin on Sept. 13 at 6:50 a.m. ET with the 1500m heats. The semifinals will be held on Sept. 14 at 8:05 a.m. ET with the finals on Sept. 16 at 9:05 a.m.
The Cork, Ireland native holds five Toledo track & field records, including the 17
th-fastest 1500m time in NCAA history with a mark of 4:07.17. She was an NCAA East First Round Qualifier, the 2025 MAC Most Outstanding Performer at the Indoor Track and Field Championships and named First-Team All-MAC five times throughout cross country and track & field.
The only other Rocket to compete in the World Athletics Championship was Paul Sehzue. Sehzue represented Liberia in the 1999 World Athletics Championships in Seville, Spain and competed in the 100m hurdles and 4x100m relays.
