Box Score 2 Charlotte, NC – Toledo dropped two games with Charlotte, 12-4 and 9-8, today at Hayes Stadium. The losses drop Toledo to 1-5-1 on the season.
"Our effort today was fine," said head coach Cory Mee. "We're disappointed by the results but we get an opportunity to play tomorrow. We need to pick ourselves up and I believe our guys will be hungry to play tomorrow."
In game one, Ross Achter picked up the loss for the Rockets after throwing 4.1 innings and giving up three earned runs. J.D Prochaska earned the win for the 49ers.
The Rockets hit three home runs during the contest. Senior 3B Dan Zuchowski went 1-for-4 with one home run and two RBI. Sophomore OF AJ Montoya hit his second home run of the season and senior OF John Martillotta also hit a homer.
Charlotte jumped on the board first in the second inning after scoring on a throwing error by Zuchowski.Â
ÂThe 49ers extended the lead to four in the fifth inning to four on a two-run home run and a fielder's choice.
Toledo would cut the lead in half in the sixth to make the game 4-2 with a home run from Montoya and Martillotta.Â
The Niners busted the game open in the same inning. Toledo committed two errors and Charlotte took advantage with a seven run frame which included a grand slam by T.J. Nichting to extend the lead to nine. Charlotte would add a run in the seventh to make the score 12-2.
Montoya and Zuchowski both hit home runs in the eighth to cut the lead to 12-4.
Game two went to extra innings, as Toledo was able to tie the game in the ninth but fell in the bottom of the 11th.
Senior RHP John Martillotta picked up the loss after throwing 0.2 innings in the 11th. Junior RHP Sam Shutes went 3.2 frames and allowed one earned run in the start.Â
Senior SS Deion Tansel went 4-for-6 with two home runs and four RBI to lead the way for the Rockets. Senior OF Ryan Callahan also collected four hits and a walk for UT.
Toledo lit up the scoreboard first as Tansel hit a solo shot to left field to give UT a 1-0 lead. Tansel would hit another home run in the third to extend the lead to three.
Junior 1B Josh Cales would hit UT's third home run of the game in the fourth and make the game 4-0.
Charlotte capitalized on two Toledo errors to score three runs in the same inning.
The Midnight Blue & Gold scored two runs off a Tansel double and Montoya sacrifice fly in the sixth to extend the UT lead to 6-3. Charlotte stormed back in the same inning, scoring four runs and took the lead, 7-6.
Toledo tied the game in the eighth with a groundout from Senior OF Cory Finkler. The Niners regained the lead in the same inning on a passed ball.
Zuchowski would tie the game in the ninth for the Rockets on a double play ball that brought home Tansel.
Logan Sherer won the game for the 49ers in the bottom of the 11th with a single to right field.
Toledo will wrap up the series with Charlotte tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. at Hayes Stadium.Â
