Toledo (1-3) put up a strong fight but ended up suffering a 3-0 (30-17, 30-24, 30-22) setback tonight to Michigan (4-0) in its final match of the sixth-annual Rocket Classic. The Wolverines captures the tournament title by winning all four of their matches and dropping just one game in the process. It is only the second time in tournament history that the Rockets did not capture their tournament title.
Senior OH Kate Bean led the Rockets with a match-high 16 kills to earn all-tournament team honors. Junior OH Sarah Kreher added nine kills, while junior MB Brittany Alaburda collected seven kills. Freshman S Mallory Ladd collected 37 assists and five digs, while freshman Ashley Rucki paced UT defensively with 15 digs.
The Wolverines featured a balanced attack with three players (Lyndsay Miller-12, Katie Bruzdzinski-11 and Beth Karpiak-11) registering double-figure kill totals. Michigan S Stesha Selsky earned tournament MVP honors and collected 45 assists and a match-best 16 digs while leading her team to a .361 attack percentage. Bruzdzinski also was earned all-tournament team honors along with senior OH Erin Penn.
Toledo returns to action on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 1-2 with a trip to Dallas, TX for the SMU Radisson Invite where it will face Grambling State, UT-Arlington and the host Mustangs.
