Toledo (13-7) let a 2-1 lead after two games slip away tonight in its 3-2 (25-30, 30-19, 24-30, 30-27, 15-11) setback to IPFW (15-9) at Savage Hall. The defeat dropped the Rockets' record in non-conference matches to 10-2 and improved the Mastodons' mark against MAC schools to 5-3.
Senior OH Rachel Mohler led UT's offensive attack with 21 kills, and junior MB Kelsey Culver registered a career-best 19 kills to go along with an impressive .429 ATK%.
Junior Fabiana Souza led IPFW with a match-high 28 kills, one short of her career high.
The Rockets came out on fire in their bid to upset the Mastodons, who are ranked 14th in the Mideast Region. UT registered a .302 hitting mark in the first game with Mohler (7 kills) and Culver (5 kills) leading the way.
Souza then took control in the second game with a game-high six kills as IPFW registered a .400 team ATK% and held Toledo to a -.056 mark.
The third game saw the Rockets regain command as Culver notched four kills and a .571 ATK% to lead UT to a 30-24 Game 3 win.
The fourth game was evenly played as both teams registered 17 kills but UT registered two more attack errors than the Mastodons and that proved to be the difference.
IPFW jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the fifth game and never trailed. UT was able to climb back to within a point on five occasions until the Mastodons ended the match with three straight points.
The Rockets return to action with a pair of road matches this weekend at MAC West Division leader Eastern Michigan (13-7, 8-1 MAC) on Friday, Oct. 22 and Central Michigan (5-15, 2-7 MAC) on Saturday, Oct. 23. Both matches will begin at 7:00 p.m.
