Nathan Leininger tosses seven innings with just three runs allowed
ATHENS, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team dropped its weekend opener at Ohio on Friday, falling to the Bobcats, 4-3 in 10 innings, at Bob Wren Stadium on Friday.
Â
The Rockets (25-25, 18-10 MAC) led 2-0 early, but the Bobcats tied the game, 2-2, in the fourth inning and took the lead, 3-2, in the seventh. Toledo scored in the eighth to force extra innings, but OU strung together three hits in a row in the 10th for the winning score. The defeat snapped the Rockets' season-long winning streak at seven games.
Â
Offensively, redshirt junior Troy Sudbrook, along with juniors Charlie Scholvin and Cade Baker each logged two-hit efforts. Sudbrook and Scholvin each marked their 24 multi-hit games of the season, while Sudbrook added his nation-leading 29th double.
Â
Senior Nathan Leininger again worked deep into the game in a quality start, pitching seven innings with three runs allowed and six strikeouts to one walk. He pitched at least seven innings for the fourth time this season. Nate Langbehn (1-3) pitched the final 2.1 innings, allowing just one run with five strikeouts but suffering the loss.
Â
The series continues tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. on ESPN+.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Really disappointing game on offense today. Both Leininger and Langbehn threw the ball well. Good enough to win the game, but we have to score more than three runs off that pitching. For being such a good offense on paper, it didn't show today. We were passive, made no adjustments and beat ourselves. Nothing to do but come ready to compete tomorrow and win."
