Annika Munson’s three-set singles win earns match victory for UT
TOLEDO, Ohio – Sophomore Annika Munson pulled out a three-set singles victory on the No. 5 court to clinch Toledo's 4-3 victory over Northern Illinois in women's tennis action on Sunday afternoon at the UT Varsity Tennis Courts. This was the Rockets' second-straight win and moves them to 2-0 in Mid-American Conference play.
UT (7-6, 2-0 MAC) dropped the doubles point before responding in singles play with four victories. Isabella Barretto got Toledo on the board, cruising to a straight-set win on the No. 2 court. JJ Scholten picked up a 0-6, 6-2, 6-4 win on the No. 1 singles court to keep the match even at 2-2. Jone Ibanez also tallied a three-set win to put Toledo in front, 3-2.
NIU picked up a three-set win on the No. 4 court, tying the match at 3-3. The match came down to the No. 5 singles court. Munson picked up a first set win with a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-1), before falling in the second set. Munson responded by posting a 6-1 win in the third set to clinch the match victory.
The win is the first for the Rockets over Northern Illinois since the 2024 dual match season. During the 2025 dual season, NIU defeated Toledo in the regular season, 4-3, and knocked UT out of the MAC Tournament during the semifinal match, 4-1.
