Gaby Rondon and Anastasia Akuginova advance to Doubles Quarterfinals
KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo women's tennis team wrapped up competition at the Mid-American Conference Individual Championship in Kalamazoo, Mich. this weekend.
The Rockets were led by Gaby Rondon and Anastasia Akuginova who advanced to the Doubles Quarterfinals. Rondon and Akuginova tallied an 8-5 win over Lucia Gaio and McKenzie Shelton from Bowling Green in the Doubles Round of 16 to move on. In the quarterfinal matchup, Rondon and Akuginova fell to Miami's Oliveria and Faulker, 8-4.
June Vigneron and Jone Ibanez represented the Rockets in the doubles competition, falling to Ball State's Sarah Shahbaz and Gabriella Barrera in the opening round, 8-1.
JJ Scholten and Akuginova competed for Toledo in the singles bracket. Scholten fell in her opening round matchup to Miami's Allie Faulkner, 6-3, 6-4, before earning a win over Eastern Michigan's Matilde Parreir 6-2, 6-3. Akuginova dropped her opening round match to Buffalo's Aleksandra Kachuski 7-6, 6-2, but closed out the tournament with a straight-set 7-5, 6-3 win over Ayana Yaguchi from Western Michigan.

"We definitely didn't have our best stuff this weekend. We have really high standards in this program and we didn't reach them. Losing is motivating and so I expect our players to respond in a positive way."

Toledo will conclude fall competition by hosting the Rocket Indoor Invite on Friday-Saturday, Oct. 30-31 at Twos Athletic Club.
