Rocket Spotlight on K'Von Sherman

On tackling in flag football, sticking with the fundamentals, and his family's 19-hour journey to see him play

K'Von Sherman is a junior linebacker from Pearland, Texas. He is in his second season in a Rocket uniform after beginning his career at Hutchinson Community College in Kansas. This season, Sherman leads the team with 46 tackles and 7.0 tackles for loss, including career highs with 4.0 TFLs against Morgan State and 12 tackles at Bowling Green.

On growing up and when he started playing football
"I started playing football when I was around six years old, playing flag. But the flag journey didn't last too long because I was out there tackling kids in flag football. After that, I moved into tackling and the rest is history."

On what happened when he tackled another kid in flag football
"I think it was my first game out of the gate. We were playing the Colts but they were green and yellow. I had tackled a kid and everybody was like, 'whoa, whoa, whoa, you pull the flag, pull the flag.' And I was like, 'well, I don't want to pull the flag, why can't we tackle?' The penalty was probably like five yards because it was flag football, the refs didn't care too much."

On what positions he played growing up
"At first I played defensive end. I was just running off the edge. Coach was telling me to run the L -that's what they used to say back in the day. Then, I switched to tight end. Then, I switched back to defense. I also played basketball one year in eighth grade, but it obviously didn't last that long."

On how Texas high school football is different from other states
"Bigger stadiums. I've met a lot of dudes from a lot of different places around the world, from junior college and from here, and there's a lot of good players. So, pretty much, Texas is just bigger stadiums and bigger crowds."

On what he learned from playing junior college football
"I chose a JUCO level college because I kind of really didn't have the choice. I didn't have the best grades coming out of high school. So I knew if I wanted to play D-I ball, I was going to have to go to Hutch or any junior college period. I learned that you've just got to put your head down and work. You might not see results quickly, but if you keep on working, your results are going to come to light eventually."

On why he chose Toledo
"Toledo was ranked Top 25 (in 2023), when they were winning ball games, and they had Dallas Gant and Dan Bolden as linebackers, I knew that they were going to need a linebacker to come in and step up once they finished. During the summer of 2023 VK (defensive coordinator/linebackers coach Vince Kehres) reached out to me. Once he started reaching out to me, he was really the only coach to consistently call me every week to check up on me and ask how I'm doing in school and stuff like that."

On what he has learned from Coach Kehres and playing on special teams
"Coach Kehres taught me that you really just have to be real fundamental. VK, he just really harps on the fundamentals - the lateral footwork and striking a lineman with tight hands and elbows, stuff like that. In high school or junior college, I didn't play any special teams. So, when I first got here, this was my first time being on special teams and having to take on that role. Who wouldn't want to run down on a kickoff, lay somebody out, and then on first down they run the ball and you get a tackle for loss? I like it."

On his nickname
"My coach in high school started calling me Sherm, since my last name is Sherman. Sometimes I even go back home and everyone's like, 'who's Sherm?'. Coach Kehres brings out  'Showtime' from time-to-time if I make a good play during practice or if I had a good game."

On his role as big brother to five siblings
"One just started playing basketball and one does cheer, so they're athletes. My brother plays basketball as well and he's doing pretty good in that. You've just got to do everything right and show them that there's more to life out here than what you just see on your phone. You've got to respect people, you've got to make sure you're treating people the right way, doing the right thing."

On where he takes his family when they make the long trek to Toledo
"Mom always tries her best to make it up to most of the games; my family's probably at most of the games, the majority of them. Sometimes they fly, sometimes they drive. The drive is 19 hours; it's a long drive. When they get here, I've always got to show them around and take them to most of the spots where I've been going. I usually take them to Bubba's and then one time we went to Barry's Bagels off Secor Road. They love Bubba's back in Texas. It's right next to Texas Roadhouse, so we go there sometimes too. It feels like you're back home for a minute."
