BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - The Toledo Rockets lost to arch-rival Bowling Green, 28-23, in the Battle of I-75 at Doyt Perry Stadium on Saturday.
Toledo (3-3, 1-2 MAC) jumped out to a 21-0 lead in the first half and led 21-7 heading into the locker room, but the Falcons (3-3, 1-1 MAC) scored 21 points in the second half to take a 28-21 lead. Toledo was credited with a safety on the game's final play when Bowling Green intentionally ran the ball out of the back of the end zone to run out the clock.
"Obviously, a tough outcome to that football game," said Head Coach Jason Candle. "Hats off to Bowling Green. That was one tough game today. They made a couple more plays than we did at the end. Disappointed in our ability to complete in the second half and pick up first downs. We put ourselves in a hole, often times with penalties that cost us and put us behind the eight ball. We had a lot of mistakes and self-inflicted things we have to clean up if we're going to improve as a football team."
Senior quarterback Tucker Gleason finished 19-of-30 on the day with one touchdown, adding a 12-yard rushing score. Senior Chip Trayanum rushed for 125 yards on 27 carries with a touchdown. Senior wide receiver Junior Vandeross finished with 100 yards on six catches to lead Rocket receivers.
Junior K'Von Sherman made 12 tackles with seven solo stops, adding 2.0 tackles for loss. Braden Awls came away with the Rockets' only turnover with a fourth-quarter interception.
