TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo Women's Track & Field team will begin its 2024 outdoor season at Miami University's Blizzard Buster in Oxford, Ohio on Friday, March 22.
Six Rockets will be competing at the meet, led by distance runners
Aubrey Duhaime,
Michaela McGill, and
Lillian Nasta. Jumpers Sydney Caddell and Lexi Plott will also be competing, as will freshman Nora Hark in the javelin.
UT ended the 2024 indoor season with a seventh-place finish at the MAC Indoor Track & Field Championships on Feb. 23-24 in Ypsilanti, Mich. The distance medley relay team made up of
Lianna Surtz,
Laura Nicholson,
Krystal Clark, and
Cadence Christie notched a first-place finish with a time of 11:30.45, the second-fastest time in Toledo history.
Surtz went on to claim second place in the mile at the conference meet with a time of 4:53.25, and narrowly beat out Central Michigan's Anya Turner by .35 of a second.
Earlier in the season, the Rockets set two school records at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational hosted by Boston University in early February. Nicholson won her heat in the mile with a 4:34.35 finish before senior
Vilde Henriksen recorded a time of 9:13.62 in the 3,000m. Both results broke school records.
In addition to Nicholson's performance in Boston, the Cork, Ireland native earned two MAC Track Athlete of the Week honors so far this season. Her first came in mid-January following an impressive performance at the Wolverine Invitational. Nicholson won the mile with a time of 4:41.74 which ranks fourth all-time for UT. Nicholson's second honor came just two weeks later following a victory in the mile at the Michigan Invitational with a 4:37.92 finish that topped her previous school record, ranking as the third-best time in Toledo history.
Following the conclusion of the indoor track & field season, five Rockets were awarded All-MAC honors. Surtz, Christie, Clark, and Nicholson earned first-team All-MAC honors for their victory in the 4000m distance medley relay. Freshman
Mercy Kinyanjui was also recognized for her second-place finish in the 3000m with a time of 9:26.44.
After this Friday's opener at Miami, the Rockets are scheduled to compete in 10 more meets leading up to the MAC Outdoor Championships in DeKalb, Ill. on May 9-11.
