TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team took the court in its lone exhibition game of the season on Sunday and cruised to an 88-29 win vs. Ohio Dominican at Savage Arena.
The Rockets scored 31 points in the first quarter and led 51-14 at halftime, fueled by a 71.4 field goal percentage in the first half. Â Their lead continued to grow as the game wore on, and they outscored the Panthers 37-15 in the second half to close things out.
Three Rockets scored in double figures, with fifth-year senior
Quinesha Lockett leading the way with 20 points.
"It felt great to have one final tune-up, and also to be able to do that at Savage in front of our home fans," head coach
Tricia Cullop said. "It was good to see our depth today, I'm proud of the way we played. Our players are excited for the regular season to start. Every time we've scrimmaged I feel like we've gotten better."
Cullop coached against a familiar face in Ohio Dominican's Melanie Balcomb, who was the head coach at Xavier from 1993-2002. Cullop was an assistant at Xavier from 1996-2000.
"I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for her," Cullop said. "I'm so blessed that I had an opportunity to learn from her. She is one of the best coaching minds in our game. It was a privilege to have her here today."
The Rockets begin their regular season on the road at James Madison on Wednesday, Nov. 8. Highlighting Toledo's non-conference slate are four matchups against 2023 NCAA Tournament teams: James Madison, Gonzaga, Michigan, and Duke. Toledo will host Michigan in Savage Arena on Wednesday, Dec. 6 in a nationally televised game on the CBS Sports Network, and also a rematch of last season's upset victory in Ann Arbor. The Rockets also host Cincinnati on Sunday, Nov. 19 in their home opener.
"This is going to be an exciting team to watch," Cullop said. "You don't get this many 'super seniors' and veterans returning very often. This is something to celebrate and enjoy, and I hope our fans come out this year and be a part of it."
