Rockets Thump Golden Grizzlies, 19-8

Toledo, Ohio - The bats came alive on Tuesday for the Toledo baseball team in its 19-8 win over Oakland at Scott Park.

The Rockets jumped out to an early 4-0 lead after a productive bottom of the first inning, then blew the game wide open with a nine-run third inning. Toledo scored six more runs from that point on in the big win over the Golden Grizzlies.

Every starter for the Midnight Blue and Gold contributed in some fashion on Tuesday. Eight of the nine starters recorded multiple hits, eight scored multiple runs, eight drove in at least one run, and five tallied extra-base hits.

Senior Riley Campbell went 3-for-3 and reached twice via the walk and hit by pitch, and also tied a career high with four RBIs. Sophomore Chris Meyers drove in three runs and hit the Rockets' only home run, while senior Brad Boss reached base four times and drove in three runs. Sophomore Drew Compton went 2-for-3 and drove in three runs while walking twice, and sophomores Trace Hatfield and Zach Schwartzenberger drove in two runs and scored three times, respectively.

On the mound, freshman Kyle Jones made the first start of his career, and freshman Jamie Myers and Sophomore Bryce Davis also saw time on the mound.

Toledo travels to play Purdue Fort Wayne on Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. before returning home and hosting Central Michigan this weekend.

How it Happened
  • The Rockets were handed their first run of the game, as the first four batters of the game were walked to bring in a run. Hatfield and freshman Darryn Davis both drove in runs on sacrifice flies, while Compton singled to center field to bring home Boss and make the score 4-0.
  • Oakland scored its first run of the game in the top of the second on and RBI single up the middle.
  • Toledo's offensive exploded for nine runs in the bottom of the third. Fourteen hitters came to the plate that inning, and UT did its damage on seven hits. The first two runs scored on a wild pitch and bases-loaded walk, respectively, but the Rockets did the rest of the damage themselves. Campbell drove in a run on an RBI single, then Boss followed up with the bases loaded and drove home all three runners with a double to center field. Hatfield and Compton both singled through the left side of the infield to drive in runs and cap the huge inning.
  • Oakland added two runs in the top of the fourth, then Meyers answered back with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the fourth.
  • Meyers drove in the more runs in the bottom of the fifth on an double to right field, then Campbell added another run on a sacrifice fly.
  • The Golden Grizzlies plated three runs in the top of the sixth, the big swing being a two-run homer to right-center field. They added a run in the top of the seventh and eight as well
  • Campbell wrapped up the scoring for the Midnight Blue and Gold, driving in two on a single to right field in the bottom of the seventh.
