For the third straight game, the Rockets' offense produced at least 10 runs, powered by a season-high four home runs. Senior Brad Boss hit two dingers and walked twice, while sophomore Trace Hatfield went 3-for-4, scored a career-high four runs, and hit one of UT's homers. Freshman Darryn Davis hit the first home run of his collegiate career, and fellow rookie Thomas Eitniear drove in three runs. Sophomores Chris Meyers and John Servello, and freshman Mark Mohnickey all tallied two hits.
Senior Axel Bueter started on the mound for Toledo, throwing 4.2 innings and striking out five while walking one. Sophomore Kyle Bischoff, junior Austin Calopietro, and freshman Aric McAtee all saw time on the bump as well.
Toledo resumes conference play this weekend with a home series against Central Michigan.
How it Happened
- Meyers walked with the bases loaded in the top of the second to bring in the first run of the game and give the Rockets a 1-0 lead.
- Boss and Hatfield both smacked solo home runs in the top of the third to extend the lead to 3-0.
- Purdue Fort Wayne got its first runs of the game in the bottom of the third. A single into the gap in right-center field brought home the first, then an infield groundout drove in the second. The Rockets escaped further trouble by turning a slick double play, but the Mastadons had pulled within one, 3-2.
- PFW took the lead in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run homer, making the score 4-3.
- Eitniear put the Rockets back on top, 5-4, with a two-run, two-out double in the top of the fifth.
- An infield single for the Mastadons brought in the tying run in the bottom of the fifth and put the score at 5-5.
- Eitniear again put Toledo back in the lead with a successful squeeze bunt in the top of the sixth to make it 6-5.
- Purdue Fort Wayne retook the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. An RBI single up the middle tied the score at 6-6, then a failed pickoff attempt brought home the go-ahead run.
- Boss led off the top of the eighth with his second home run of the game to tie the game at 7-7. Hatfield then scored on a wild pitch to give UT the lead for good at 8-7.
- After a scoreless ninth from Calopietro, Meyers scampered home on a two-out wild pitch in the top of the ninth to make it 9-7, then Davis launched his two-run home run to put the score at 11-7.
