MUNCIE, IN - The Rockets won both games of the Sunday doubleheader against Ball State. Sophomore Steven Calhoun was dominant on the mound in Game One and helped guide UT to a 6-1 win while timely hitting and runs down the stretch propelled Toledo to a 8-3 victory in Game Two.
The Midnight Blue & Gold have now won three consecutive series' in Mid-American Conference play and are now tied with the Cardinals for second place in the West Division.
Calhoun was masterful on the bump in Game One. The Tipp City, OH native went the distance and gave up just five hits and one unearned run while striking out nine BSU batters. Calhoun is now 4-4 on the season with a 2.57 ERA.
The Toledo offense gave Calhoun plenty of breathing room as the Rockets racked up 11 hits including three apiece from senior Nate Langhals and junior Deion Tansel. Junior John Martillotta led the way with a pair of RBI while Tansel, Langhals and freshmen A.J. Montoya and Matt Hansen each recorded one RBI.
The Toledo offense continued to roll in Game Two as the Rockets scored three runs in the seventh and two more in the eighth to pull away from the Cardinals down the stretch. Montoya played a key role as the St. Joseph's, MI native stuffed the stat sheet with three hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Hansen tallied a pair of RBI to go along with his three hits. Tansel and Langhals also drove in runs for UT.
Senior Andrew Marra picked up his second win of the season in a relief effort for start Caleb Schillace. Schillace was a solid on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one run on seven hits.
The Rockets return to action on Tuesday afternoon as they travel down I-75 for a matchup with arch-rival Bowling Green at 3:05 p.m. The Falcons then make the trip up to the Glass City on Wednesday as Toledo hosts at Scott Part. Wednesday's contest is scheduled to begin at 3:05 p.m.
