TOLEDO, OH - Freshman forward Jordan Dressler led four
Rockets in double figures with a career-high 19 points, but Buffalo scored the
contest's final six points to take a 65-59 win over the University of Toledo
men's basketball team Saturday night in Savage Arena.
The Bulls (12-9, 5-5 MAC) had taken a 59-53 lead, their
biggest of the night to that point, with 7:38 to play. Junior forward Justin Anyijong
and Dressler answered with layups, and freshman guard Jake Barnett's driving
left-handed lay-in between two defenders tied it at 59 with 4:46 to play.
But the Rockets (3-21, 0-10 MAC) could not score again,
missing their final four shots while turning the ball over three times in their
last seven possessions as Buffalo pulled away down the stretch.
Dressler connected on 9-of-13 shots for his 19 points, which
was also a game-high. Barnett finished with 14 points and a game-high six
rebounds, and Anyijong and freshman guard Malcolm Griffin both scored 10 to
lead the Rockets. Griffin also finished with a game-high six helpers in the
loss.
The Rockets had a hot start offensively in the first half,
drilling eight of their first 12 shots, including four from beyond the arc.
Anyijong hit a pair of three-pointers in the opening minutes, and Griffin
banked one home as well with the shot clock expiring to help Toledo build a
21-15 lead.
Dressler caught a pass on the left block, spun to the middle
and laid it in to make 29-22, and the lead grew to nine on Freelove's layup as
the offense continued to click even after Anyijong collected his second foul
and went to the bench. Buffalo, though, limited Toledo to seven points over the
final six and a half minutes of the half to cut the Rockets' lead to 38-37 at
intermission.
Dressler scored 13 points in the half on 6-of-6 shooting
from the floor as the Rockets closed the frame by hitting on 61.5 percent of
their field goal attempts.
Toledo had a nice surge to begin the second half. Griffin
found a cutting Barnett for a layup to make it 42-37, and Griffin's short hook
in the paint put Toledo in front by seven a little under three minutes into the
half. The Bulls responded, though, with a 12-2 run to take their first lead
since the opening seconds of the game to hold a 51-48 advantage with 12:06
left.
Barnett tied it at 51 with a three-pointer, but Buffalo
again responded with an 8-2 scoring run to take a 59-53 lead with seven and a
half minutes to play.
The Rockets shot 51 percent (26-of-51) for the game and held
a decided 42-22 edge in points in the paint. But the Bulls received more help
from their bench, with their second-unit tallying 24 points to six for Toledo's
reserves. The Bulls also connected on 13-of-18 free throws compared to 2-of-6
for the Rockets.
Toledo heads on the road
for its next two contests, traveling to Oxford, OH to take on Miami at 7 p.m.
Wednesday, Feb. 10 before a road tilt at Central Michigan at 4:30 p.m. Sunday,
Feb. 14.
