Sean Craig is a senior forward on the Toledo men's basketball team. A Sylvania, Ohio native and Northview grad, Craig is a finance major who returned home to join the Rockets' program last spring after averaging 12.1 ppg and a team-high 7.7 rpg for IU-Indy last year.Â
On his college basketball journey
"I started out at the University of Indianapolis for the first two years of college, which is at the Division II level. That's where I learned how to be a college player. I was far from home and didn't go home too much. That's where I learned how to be my own person and to increase my work ethic just to try to get on the court. During my freshman and sophomore year, I played with I think seven soon-to-be professional athletes. We had a lot of talent and a lot of upperclassmen. Then my coach went to IUPU Indy which is a Division I school in the Horizon League. I got the chance to play more there and showcase what I was working on. He was let go unfortunately, and I hit the transfer portal and decided it was time to come to Toledo."
On his playing style
"I'm determined and hardworking. I like to do the little things that help win games like rebounding, getting my hands dirty, diving on the floor, and be a toughness-type of guy."
On being a leader
"I think I'm a good leader and tried to be that even as a freshman in college. I raise my voice when needed and like to lead mostly behind the scenes. I will pull guys aside to see what's going on and to see if I can help. That's the way I've always been. I think my leadership was probably fostered by the coaching staff at Northview and my parents."

On who he looked up to growing up and their effect on his basketball career
"In my personal life I would say it's my dad. We worked out all the time together when I was growing up. From a famous basketball player perspective, I would say Dennis Rodman. My dad is a Bulls fan, and he would tell me all about him. Then I would use him in NBA2K, and I really liked how he played when I saw highlights of him."
On playing other sports growing up
"I experimented with flag football when I was younger, but other than that it was pretty much basketball."
On when he knew he could play basketball in college
"I would say college basketball became a possibility for me after my freshman year of high school. There were college coaches at a tournament in the spring, and our coach had them talk to us. They said I had a chance to play college basketball. That was the first time it crossed my mind. I always wanted to play college basketball, but that was the first time it became a real possibility."
On his most memorable moments in basketball
"I have a couple. My most memorable moment in college would be last year when me and our two seniors combined for over 70 points on senior night and we got the win. It was really fun. In high school, my favorite moment was winning the district championship at Northview."
On playing in Savage Arena this season in front of his family and friends
"It's definitely cool to be able to do that, because growing up I would always think 'I want to play there one day'. After playing in Savage three or four times when I was in high school, I now have the chance to play in the best facility I've had in my college career. When we played at Detroit Mercy last year it was great, because I had about 20 people at the game. Now it will be easy for people to come and see me play because I'm so close."
On how he's grown since he was a freshman
"Off the court I think I've grown by just becoming more independent. I had to meet new people and find out what I wanted to do in life. In terms of basketball, I have learned what to do to get minutes. I know you need to do the little things to maximize your efficiency and time on the court. I think I also have learned how to gel with different personalities."
On the team bonding activities like tubing and fishing this past summer
"I liked going to Coach K's lake house and tubing because I didn't fall off. It was fun to see who could stay on the longest. Fishing was a slow start for me, but that was my first time fishing. I think I ended up catching about eight and it was fun. I think all that helps us be loose and free with each other. We can be a little vulnerable and goof off some. All that helps us to get to know people better and know who they truly are. Sometimes you're a little closed off at practice and might not be yourself. I think these bonding activities let people see people for who they really are."
On hobbies or interests outside of basketball
"I like to golf, but I haven't been out in a while. Me and a couple of teammates will play against each other. I like how quiet it is. I like that it's relaxing and then you still have a competitive edge when you play. I also like to play video games and then just watch some random TV shows on Netflix or something."
On his eating habits during the season
"I don't eat unhealthy foods for three days before a game. Then I usually like to eat pasta right before a game. The funny thing is that it's led me to being healthier throughout the year. I don't even drink pop during the season. Then I'll have a Coke in the summer, and it doesn't taste good so I won't finish it."
On focusing on academics
"I think that started when I was younger because if I got all A's that my parents would take me to Florida. Plus, you can't play if you don't have good grades. I'm majoring in finance now and am open to see where that takes me."
