TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (7-11, 2-5 MAC) dominated Kent State (10-12, 3-4 MAC) on both sides of the net as the Rockets rolled to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-17) sweep over the Golden Flashes on Friday evening in Savage Arena. The victory continued UT's recent success against KSU as it was the Midnight Blue and Gold's third win in a row in the series between the two schools.
Sophomore OH Sondra Parys topped the Rockets for a second-straight match with 15 kills and a .344 attack percentage. Parys led the way for an efficient UT attack as Toledo posted a .292 hitting mark and limited KSU to a miniscule .063 ATK%.
Sophomore MB Bailey Blank (six kills, .667 ATK%), junior RSH Cassie Kleespies (six kills, .556 ATK%) and freshman MB Becca Reidy (nine kills, .300 ATK%) also enjoyed strong offensive outings for the Rockets.
Toledo held a 44-32 advantage in the dig department with junior S Kassie Kadera leading the way with 10 digs and was one of four Rockets with eight or more digs.
Junior OH Liva Brivule led Kent State with 11 kills but also was forced to commit 12 attack errors en route to a -.026 attack percentage.
Toledo jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening set and never looked back. The Golden Flashes climbed to within 9-7, but UT quickly responded with a 6-2 spurt to force KSU to call timeout. Parys dominated the set with eight kills and a .500 attack mark as the Rockets held a .412-.219 advantage in the hitting department.
The second set was a nip-and-tuck affair early on as neither team enjoyed more than a two-point lead until a Parys kill put the Rockets up 11-8. Following a KSU timeout, Toledo extended its cushion further to 14-9 before the visitors rallied to within 14-12. That was as close as the Golden Flashes would come though as UT finished off the set with a 7-2 run.
UT fell behind 5-3 early in the third set but wouldn't let Kent State get any farther ahead. The Rockets broke it open with a 5-0 spurt late in the set to take a 21-14 advantage. Freshman OH Lauren Rafdal and Reidy topped UT offensively in the set with three kills apiece.
Toledo is back in action on Saturday, Oct. 16 when it battles defending MAC champion Ohio at 3:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
