Toledo Blanks MAC Frontrunner Central Michigan, 1-0

10/19/2008 4:00:00 AM

MOUNT PLEASANT, MI ? In a battle between the top two teams in the Mid-American Conference, Toledo emerged with a 1-0 shutout victory against Central Michigan on Sunday at the CMU Soccer Complex. The win was the fifth straight for the Rockets and improved their record to 11-4-0 on the season, including 6-2-0 in the league.

Junior Heather Wesley scored the contest's lone goal in the 58th minute and freshman Vicki Traven stopped a career-high 10 shots as the two-time defending MAC tourney champs spoiled the Chippewas' “Senior Day.”

After the teams played a scoreless first half, UT's Wesley tallied the eventual match-winner from about 18-yards out at 57:35. The goal was the fourth of the season for the Dublin, OH native and marked the first tally allowed by the Chippewas at home.

CMU (11-3-1, 6-1-1 MAC) put up several shots after the Rockets went ahead, including a pair of near misses by Stephanie Martin and Amanda Waugh that would have tied the match. Fortunately for Toledo, the defense stayed strong and kept the home team off the scoreboard.

“This was a really good win for our team,” Toledo senior defender Laura Mecklenborg said. “Today's match was especially difficult, because CMU is a very talented squad. This contest came down to one play and Heather scored a big goal.”

CMU finished with a slight 17-13 edge in shots, including a match-high nine off the foot of Martin. Wesley paced UT's attack with three shots.

The Rockets return to action on Friday, Oct. 24 when they host Buffalo. The opening whistle is slated for 4:00 p.m. from Scott Park.
