ATHENS, OH - The No. 21-ranked Ohio University volleyball team was too much for Toledo to handle this afternoon as the Rockets dropped a 3-0 (30-20, 30-23, 30-22) decision to the Bobcats. Ohio improves to 15-4 overall and 7-1 in the Mid-American Conference with its fifth straight sweep, while Toledo remains winless in conference play at 0-8 and falls to 3-16 overall.
Junior OH Shannon Strachan paced the Rockets' offense with 12 kills and an impressive .450 attack percentage. Senior OH TaNeisha Winters led UT defensively with 10 digs, while sophomore MB Sarah Wilson collected a team-high four blocks.
The Bobcats were led by Toledo native Ellen Herman's 13 kills and .357 hitting mark. Herman played well the entire match, but stepped up for the Bobcats in the third game to end any chances of a Toledo comeback. Herman hit .455 in the game, landing seven kills on 11 swings to boost Ohio to the 30-22 win.
The Bobcats held a significant hitting advantage, connecting on a .316 percentage compared to the Rockets' .150 mark. Ohio also held a substantial advantage up front, recording 15 blocks on the afternoon to Toledo's seven.
Ohio senior MB Melissa Griffin joined Herman in double-digit kills with 10 and hit .409 for the match. Senior outside hitter Stephanie Blackburn had nine kills (.200) to go with eight digs and Andersen had 13 swings in the match and eight kills on a .385 hitting percentage in the win.
The Rockets return to action on Friday, Oct. 19 with the first contest of a four-match homestand against arch-rival Bowling Green (15-7, 6-2 MAC). Starting time for the match is 7:00 p.m.
