MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) -- Senior guard Justin Ingram scored nine points, grabbed a career-high 13 rebounds and made the game-winning layup at the buzzer to lead Toledo past Ball State 62-60 in the Mid-American Conference opener for both teams Saturday.
Ingram scored seven of his nine points in the second half, including a three-pointer that gave the Rockets (5-8, 1-0 MAC) a one-point lead with 53 seconds remaining.
Senior forward Keonta Howell had 16 points and junior guard Kashif Payne added 10 points and five assists for Toledo.
Ingram slipped past Ball State's Peyton Stovall on a drive and sank a running bank shot with 0.5 seconds left to give the Rockets the win. BSU's Skip Mills was guarding Ingram on the perimeter when senior forward Florentino Valencia's screen freed him for his drive down the right side of the lane.
Anthony Newell led Ball State (4-10, 0-1) with 11 points and seven rebounds in the Cardinals' fourth straight loss.
Peyton Stovall scored seven first-half points as Ball State led 29-22 at halftime.
Toledo shot 13-of-23 (57 percent) in the second half and held Ball State to 10-of-29 (35 percent) shooting. The Rockets held a 43-31 rebounding edge and outscored the Cardinals in the paint 27-22.
Toledo returns to action on Tuesday, Jan. 9 when it travels to Mt. Pleasant, MI to meet Central Michigan (6-7, 1-0 MAC). Tip-off time is 7:00 p.m.
