Colorado Springs, CO - Meredith Benson netted a pair of goals to lead Air Force to a 2-0 win over Toledo on Sunday afternoon at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. With today's setback, the Rockets fall to 2-1-0 on the season.
"We were never able to get on track today," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "We had trouble winning and controlling the ball."
Air Force controlled a majority of the action scoring the eventual game-winning goal at the 7:27 mark. Benson took a pass from the top-right corner of Toledo's box from Brittney Perkowski and fired the ball past UT sophomore goalkeeper Jen Whipple from 15 yards out. The goal was the first surrendered by the Rockets in three games.
Meanwhile, the Falcon defense stymied Toledo's offense, holding the Midnight Blue and Gold to just one shot in the first 45 minutes. On the day, the Rockets fired off seven shots, mostly near the end of the match.
Benson struck for her second goal nine minutes into the second half, at the 54:29 mark, heading in the ball off a corner kick from from Betsy Eames.
Whipple was tested all afternoon and made three saves for Toledo, while Air Force's Jennifer Drew recorded her second shutout of the year notching three saves in the process.
Toledo returns to action on Friday, Sept. 10 when the Midnight Blue and Gold hosts Valparaiso at Owens Community College. Game time is slated for 5:00 p.m.
