TOLEDO, OH - Toledo (1-0) scored three goals over an 11 minute period in the second half to break open a close match and shutout Cleveland State (0-2), 4-0, in its season opener at rainy Anthony Wayne High School. With the win, the Rockets improve to 7-3 all-time in season-opening matches.
"I think the players, as well as the coaching staff are pleased to get that first win," fourth-year Head Coach Brad Evans said. "Having not played a game in almost 10 days, it took us a while to shake some of the rust off. But give Cleveland State a lot of credit. Despite being just a first-year program, they are a good, competitive team."
The host Rockets struck first blood when freshman Pene Hughes received a pass from senior Rebecca Hollis and found the back of the net at 7:36.
The score held until the 59th minute when the Rockets went on a scoring burst, registering three goals in a 10:24 span. Hughes started the run at the 58:42 mark with her second goal of the match with junior Kelly Langenbeck and sophomore Sarah Hazenfield receiving assists.
"It was nice to see Pene create some quality scoring opportunities," Evans said. "She is a talented player who we feel will have a excellent career at Toledo."
Toledo upped its lead to 3-0 at the 60:23 mark on Langenbeck's first tally of the season. The junior co-captain corralled a loose ball in the middle of the goal box and found herself unmarked. She got control of the ball and blasted it home from 10 yards out.
Junior Lindsey Zembower rounded out Toledo's scoring at 69:06 with a score from classmate Sarah Crane.
Toledo held a decisive 29-2 shot advantage in the match. Sophomore Jen Whipple and junior Molly Patterson combined for the shutout as each made one save apiece for the Rockets. Allie Zajaros absorbed the loss for the Vikings, collecting six saves in the first half. Ashley Kidwell played the second half between the posts for CSU, also making six stops.
Toledo returns to action on Friday, Sept. 3 when the Midnight Blue and Gold travels to Colorado Springs, CO to take on Air Force in non-conference action. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. (MT)
