Toledo (16-13, 5-11 MAC) produced a valiant effort tonight with both of its setters out due to injury but ended up on the short end of a 3-2 (30-22, 26-30, 26-30, 30-22, 15-8) decision at MAC West Division champion Ball State (19-9, 12-4 MAC). The Rockets are the No. 10 seed in the MAC Tournament and will be on the road at No. 7 Northern Illinois in a first-round match on Tuesday, Nov. 16.
Junior Kelsey Culver filled in for Emi Holsclaw and Sarah Kreher and finished the night with 47 assists, 17 digs, three kills and two blocks.
"Kelsey was setting for the first time in a match since eighth grade and she did a fantastic job," UT Head Coach Kent Miller said. "The team played with a lot of heart and I think we just ran out of gas at the end. Even though we lost tonight, I hope we can carry over the effort we showed in tonight's performance into the MAC Tournament."
Senior Rachel Mohler led the Rockets with 20 kills followed by sophomore Kate Bean with 19 kills. Redshirt freshman Brittany Alaburda also enjoyed a strong match with seven kills and a career-high .545 attack percentage.
Bean tied for the team dig lead with sophomore Lora Sarich with 18 apiece, while junior Corrie Magnus collected a team-high eight blocks.
