TOLEDO, OH - The Toledo women's soccer team (2-5-0, 1-2-0 MAC) suffered a 3-1 defeat to the Kent State Golden Flashes (5-1-1, 3-0-0 MAC) on Friday afternoon in front of a Youth Day crowd at Scott Park.
"This is a tough loss," Toledo Head Coach Brad Evans said. "I thought we played well enough to win and that is what makes it so difficult to talk to your team about after a game like this. We must stress to them to remain upbeat because we're playing good soccer."
The Golden Flashes took just a little over 20 minutes to prove their might as midfielder Uma Ramadorai netted a goal at 23:23 into the match. Off a corner kick by Lauren Caminati, Ramadorai wedged herself inside a couple UT defenders and headed the ball past Toledo goalkeeper Molly Patterson for her second goal of the season.
Toledo proved undaunted, however, as senior forward Melissa Lesage scored her team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 36th minute following a spectacular run by the Trois Rivieres, PQ native. Sophomore Jessica Kluesener won a free ball in the midfield and played it forward to Lesage, who promptly out-sprinted a pair of KSU defenders and fired a low line-drive shot underneath a diving KSU goalkeeper, Shannon Lynn, for the equalizer.
Kent State regained the lead for good at 51:18 of the second half on an impressive tally by Ashley Bohinc. Bohinc won a free ball outside the top of the UT penalty box, turned and fired a perfect shot into the upper, right corner of the goal for the eventual game winner.
"That second goal was the backbreaker," Evans said. "After they got that goal, they had the momentum for the rest of the match. The goal really took the air out of our kids, and we never recovered."
The Golden Flashes closed out the scoring at 83:41 on a goal by Caminati. KSU's Lauren Covay led teammate Jenn Frey with a pass into the corner, who played the ball into Caminati around the UT penalty box. Upon getting the ball under control and eluding a few Toledo defenders, Caminati blasted a shot into the far-post for the score.
Both the Rockets and the Golden Flashes finished the day with seven shots on goal. UT's netminder Patterson turned away two shots, while KSU's Lynn was forced to make five saves.
The Rockets return to action on Sunday, Sept. 21, when they host Akron at Scott Park. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
