MUNCIE, IN (AP) - Theron Smith had 24 points and 10 rebounds and Patrick
Jackson added 19 points as Ball State (17-8, 10-4 MAC) defeated Toledo (9-13, 6-7 MAC), 81-63, on Saturday.
The Cardinals used a 15-0 run four minutes into the second half to pull ahead 56-42 after trailing 36-34 at the half.
Smith's double-double was his 10th in the last 13 games and 16th of the
season. He also was 12-of-13 from the free-throw line for Ball State, which hit
23 of 26 free throws.
Lonnie Jones scored 11 points, including a dunk with 9:24 left to play that
capped the Cardinals' second-half run.
Toledo shot 56 percent from the field in the first half and hit
four of six three-pointers. Sophomore center A.J. Shellabarger's layup at the buzzer in the first half gave the Rockets a two-point lead - their biggest of the game.
Junior guard Nick Moore led Toledo with 17 points. Shellabarger scored a career-high 13 points, Terry Reynolds added 12 and Keith Triplett had 10 along with a team-high eight rebounds.
Toledo had 17 turnovers and five assists compared to Ball State's nine
turnovers and 14 assists.
The Rockets will host arch-rival Bowling Green (19-5, 9-4 MAC) on Monday, Feb. 18 at Savage Hall. Tipoff time is 7:30 p.m., and the contest will be televised live on Fox Sports Ohio.
