DETROIT (AP) - Terrell Riggs scored a game-high 14 points for Detroit Mercy
as the Titans' stifling defense helped them beat Toledo, 63-40, on Saturday.
Detroit (5-3) extended its home winning streak to 35 games, the nation's
second-longest behind Michigan State, which won its 50th straight Saturday
against Arizona.
The Titans were also helped by center Mike Harmon, who had 12 points and 10
rebounds, while junior guard Willie Green added another 12 points.
Toledo junior guard Nick Moore had 11 points and was the lone Rocket to
score in double figures.
Sophomore guardTerry Reynolds scored eight, and sophomore guardKeith Triplett added seven.
The Rockets (3-5) outrebounded the Titans, 39-32. It was the seventh straight game that UT has not been outrebounded by its opponents.
"We are rebounding the ball well and playing good defense which are normally the two hardest areas to learn," UT Head Coach Stan Joplin said. "But we really need to work on our offense. It was mind-boggling what happened today in the second half, and I don't think I've ever been associated with such a poor performance that we had today."
Moore's three-pointer tied the score at 35-35 with 14:10 to go, but the Rockets
were limited to just two field goals for the rest of the game.
The Titans' defensive effort was sparked by Jimmy Twyman, whose three-pointer
capped a 20-1 run with six minutes left in the game. Twyman also had three
steals, including two that were finished off by Riggs' tomahawk dunks.
Toledo is now idle until Thursday, Dec. 27 when it travels to Oakland to take on the Golden Grizzlies in Rochester, MI.
