Troy Sudbrook breaks program single-season doubles record with 24th double of the season

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team fell in game one in its Battle of I-75 weekend series against Bowling Green, as home runs in the fifth, sixth and eighth innings decided a 9-5 final at Steller Field on Friday.

The Rockets (18-24, 13-9 MAC) trailed 2-0 after two innings, but surged back, taking the lead in the fourth, 4-2 with a three-run frame. However, the Falcons (16-24, 9-13 MAC) tied the game with a three-run home run in the fifth, before the winning two-run long ball was hit in the sixth. The Falcons then extended the lead with another two-run home run in the eighth.

Offensively, freshman Liam Arsich came within a single of the cycle, hitting 3-for-4 on the day with a walk and solo home run. He reached base in all five plate appearances. Junior Troy Sudbrook hit 2-for-5 with a double and three RBIs. Sudbrook marked his 19th multi-hit game of the season in the effort. Junior JP Wagner hit 2-for-5 on the day, his fourth multi-hit bit of the season.

Sudbrook's fourth-inning double put him at 24 for the season, breaking Toledo's single-season doubles record.

Senior starter Nathan Leininger pitched 4.2 innings, with five runs allowed and five strikeouts on the day. Nate Langbehn (1-2) took the loss, with four runs allowed in 3.1 innings.

The Rockets and Falcons continue the Battle of I-75 series, presented by Fremont Federal Credit Union, tomorrow at 3:00 p.m.

How it Happened

The Falcons struck for two runs in the second on an RBI single and a hit by pitch. A flyout ended the inning with the bases loaded.
Troy Sudbrook delivered a two-out single to put Toledo on the board in the third.
Liam Arsich hit a home run to lead off the fourth and tie the game, 2-2. Later, the Rockets loaded the bases and Sudbrook gave Toledo a 4-2 lead on a ground-rule double.
JP Wagner added an RBI single in the fifth for a 5-2 Rockets' edge.
Bowling Green's TJ Takats tied the game, 5-5 in the bottom of the fifth with a three-run home run. Andrew DiLodovico followed with a two-run shot in the sixth for a 7-5 Falcons' lead.
Another two-run home run was hit by the Falcons' Sam Seidel in the eighth, doubling the Falcons edge to 9-5.
Toledo but the first two runners on base in the ninth to bring the tying run on deck, but the next three batters were retired to end the threat.
