Frey throws eight shutout innings and allows just one hit in first Battle of I-75 appearance
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team evened its weekend Battle of I-75 series against Bowling Green, highlighted by Hayden Frey's eight innings of one-hit baseball in a 3-1 victory at Steller Field on Saturday.
After both starters were perfect in the first three innings, the Rockets (19-24, 14-9 MAC) scored two in the fourth inning and held the lead from that point on. Toledo added another run in the seventh inning and survived a late Bowling Green rally in the ninth for the victory.
Frey (4-2) dealt all day, not allowing a baserunner until the fourth inning and carrying a no-hitter until two outs in the sixth. Frey's 8.0 innings were a season high and matched the longest outing by a Rocket pitcher this season (Nathan Leininger at Central Michigan – March 20). He struck out eight batters to just one walk and did not allow a runner in scoring position. Ryan Hughes got the first two outs in the ninth inning, before Deron Swanson retired the final batter with the bases loaded to earn his first save.
Juniors Troy Sudbrook (2-for-4) and JP Wagner (2-for-3) each collected their second multi-hit games of the series and both scored a run. Sudbrook hit his Division I-leading 25th double of the season. Junior Cole Cahill hit an RBI double in the fourth inning.
The Rockets and Falcons will play the rubber match at Steller Field tomorrow at 1:00 p.m.
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Really happy with the way we responded today after not playing our best game yesterday. It all starts on the mound. Hayden Frey gave us an amazing start when we needed it the most. Hughes and Swanson did a nice job finishing it out. We got some clutch timely hitting and played solid defense. The series is evened up and we are still in the mix for a MAC championship - six teams separated by two games. Tomorrow is a huge game not only for the Battle of I-75, but long ranging tournament implications.
Frey on His Outing
"I did a good job attacking guys early, and was able to change speeds late and keep them off balance. I was able to throw a lot of strikes. Playing against them (Bowling Green), you know it's going to be a good game and both teams are going to attack each other. It's awesome to be able to pitch well for my team and win us the game."
