Toledo tallies 10 extra-base hits for slugfest victory in series finale
Â
Toledo swept its MAC-opening series for the second time in three seasons, also sweeping Akron to open conference play in 2024.
Â
The Rockets (6-8, 3-0 MAC) totaled 10 extra-base hits – seven doubles, one triple and two home runs. After the Minutemen (4-5, 0-3 MAC) took a 5-0 lead in the second inning, Toledo scored 13 unanswered from the second through the fifth innings. The Rockets built up a 16-7 lead through seven, plenty enough for the victory. UT scored at least three runs in four innings.
Â
Five Rockets tallied multi-hit games, with three hits and four RBIs apiece from redshirt junior Troy Sudbrook and junior Jacob Payne. Sudbrook was a single away from the cycle and added three runs scored. Payne's three hits were a season high. He notched his sixth multi-hit game of the season.
Â
Ryan Hughes went 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the win, his first of the season.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"I couldn't be happier for the team for getting the win today. We got down early and didn't panic. That's a sign of a good team. The bats were outstanding today, as they were all weekend. To sweep in college baseball is extremely difficult and to do it on opening weekend of MAC play is excellent. We need to use this to propel us into next week."
