Toledo steals 12 bases en route to fourth-straight win
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. – Behind a dominant bullpen effort combined with timely hitting and speed on the bases, the Toledo baseball team took a midweek contest at Northern Kentucky, knocking off the Norse, 12-3 at the Bill Aker Baseball Complex on Tuesday.
Â
The Rockets (7-8) won their fourth game in the row. Toledo took a 2-0 lead in the third inning and re-took the lead an inning later, 4-3. UT then held the one-run advantage until the eighth, when Toledo plated two more runs, and exploded for sixth more in the ninth.
Â
Six Rockets tallied multi-hit games, including four from Carson McCaleb and three from Cade Baker. Toledo also stole 12 bases as a team, its most in a game since at least 2011, with three swipes each coming from Baker and Charlie Scholvin, and two from Saborn Campbell. The Rockets have now scored double-digit runs in the last three games.
Â
After Michael Fliss worked the first four innings, the trio of Nate Langbehn, Arturo Ormaza and Braden Curry combined for five scoreless and hitless innings to finish off the game.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Really proud of the way we competed today. After a big weekend it would have been easy to not show up today. Proud of how we were mature and came to play against a quality team. The offense was outstanding and so many guys performed and had a hand in the success. But the story of the day was the pitching. We got a really good start from Michael Fliss and the three guys out of the bullpen (Langbehn, Ormaza, and Curry) dominated and didn't allow a hit the last six innings of the game. We're playing well and will need to be on top of our game against a really talented and confident Northern Illinois team this weekend."
