Rockets post season-high in runs during series opener with Huskies
The Rockets (8-10, 4-0 MAC) have won their last five games and mark their best MAC start since 2009. UT used an 11-run first inning to take an early lead and never looked back, adding insurance runs in the second, fourth and fifth innings for the run-rule victory.
Seven Rockets tallied multi-RBI contests while four players had multi-hit outings. Two players had perfect days at the plate as Charlie Scholvin and Jacob Payne each went 2-for-2. Scholvin plated four runs and knocked in two RBIs while Payne had three RBIs and drew three walks. Liam Arisch went 3-for-4 at the plate while adding four RBIs and scoring two runs.
Nathan Leininger (W, 3-0) tossed 6.1 innings, allowing five runs on five hits and striking out nine in a winning decision. Arturo Ormaza came in for relief, tossing the final two outs and adding a strikeout.
Toledo will look to win the series tomorrow, with first pitch at 1:00 p.m. at Scott Park.
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle
"Proud of the way we attacked today. The wind was howling but we didn't let that affect anything. We played well in all three phases of the game. The hitters continued to build innings and have good at-bats all day long. With tough conditions, Nate Leininger shined today and kept a really powerful NIU offense at bay. Tomorrow is a new day and we need to keep the focus on the things that have allowed us to play some good baseball the past couple weeks."
