EUGENE, Ore. – The Toledo baseball team earned a 5-3 victory in the first game of a doubleheader at No. 12 Oregon to earn its highest-ever ranked opponent victory in program history at PK Park on Saturday.
Â
Toledo's victory was also its first over a ranked opponent since 2015, when the Rockets defeated then-No. 25 Notre Dame. Toledo has also defeated an opponent from a "Power 4/5" conference for its fourth-consecutive season.
Â
After a scoreless first five innings, featuring five scoreless frames from starting pitcher
RJ Shunck, the Rockets (1-2) scored four times in the sixth for a 4-0 lead. Toledo held the advantage until the eighth, where the Ducks (2-1) cut the lead to 4-3. Toledo then added a key insurance run in the top of the ninth and a 1-2-3 bottom half of the inning sealed things.
Â
Oregon took game two of the doubleheader, 9-0 with seven home runs, scoring in six of eight innings in which it batted.
Â
Quoting Head Coach Rob Reinstetle:
"Today was a range of emotions. We played great baseball in game one.
RJ Shunck gave us a great start on the mound and
Logan Jones came in and shut the door late. We played awesome defense and got some timely hitting for the win. I'm proud that we have achieved one of the bigger wins in program history and of how we played.
Â
"We couldn't get anything going against their pitchers in game two. We played good defense in the game and our pitching wasn't awful, but we got behind in counts and served up some pitches they could miss. When we pitch and play good defense, we can play with anyone."
