Karina James Leads Rockets Past Five Power 4 Teams at Nuttycombe Invitational

Rockets place ahead of Louisville, Minnesota and Michigan in meet at Madison, Wisc.

MADISON, Wis. – Toledo junior Karina James led the Toledo Rockets at the Nuttycombe Invitational in Madison, Wisc. on Friday, recording a time of 20:45.3 to place 57th overall in a race that featured top talent from across the country.

The Rockets competed in an extremely competitive 30-team field that included 23 programs that are ranked or receiving votes in the latest USTFCCCA National Coaches' Poll. Toledo finished ahead of five "Power 4" teams, including Louisville, Syracuse, Minnesota, Michigan and Indiana, as well as placing in front of No. 28 Providence. Toledo finished first among programs that are not receiving votes in the USTFCCCA national poll.

Following James in the individual results, sophomore Melody Jebiwot placed 87th with a time of 21:02.5. Junior Lianna Surtz (92nd/21:04.9) and graduate student Hannah Lelfield (100th/21:09.0) rounded out the UT competitors in the top 100.

Freshman Lily DiCola was the final point scorer for the Rockets, crossing the finish line at 21:45.3 to take 162nd. Jordyn Bartolomucci (170th/21:54.7) and Alex Bauer (198th/22:20.2) concluded Toledo's runners in the championship race.

Toledo saw four runners compete in the women's 6K "B" race. Sophomore Bella Earl led the way (32nd/22:03.8), followed by Jaydon Cirincione (35th/22:08.7), Margrett Watt (67th/22:53.3) and Lauren Zanotelli (78th/23:50.0).

"Today was a great showing for our team! I am really happy with how our women handled themselves in such a competitive field today. Karina (James) was great today as she led the team against really high-level national competition. This meet helped our women prepare for the beginning of our championship season where we are excited to run a full lineup at the MAC Championships."

Up Next
Toledo will head to Buffalo, N.Y. for the MAC Championship race on Saturday, Nov. 1. The women's 6K race is set to begin at noon.
