TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team swept Northern Illinois, 3-0 (25-18, 25-23, 25-19) on Saturday afternoon. Toledo moves to 9-5 overall and 2-0 in MAC play.
Toledo was led by junior
Izzy Granger with 14 kills and 11 digs, her second consecutive double-double and fifth of the season. Redshirt freshman
Kayla Ozanich added seven kills and had a team-best five blocks, including two solo blocks. Fifth year senior
Taylor Alt also tallied seven kills and a team-high 14 digs.
Sophomore setter
Macy Hatkevich totaled 34 assists to go with eight digs and two blocks of her own. Freshman libero
Grace Freiberger recorded 10 digs while
Caylee Sharkey and
Sierra Pertzborn had six and five kills, respectively.
Northern Illinois (2-10, 0-2 MAC) was led by Ava Grevengoed and Alexa Hayes with six kills.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET ONE (25-18 Toledo)
- A service ace from Macy Hatkevich gave Toledo their first lead early in the set, 5-4.
- The Rockets pushed the lead to three behind kills from Izzy Granger and Sierra Pertzborn.
- The Huskies used a 5-1 run to get within one, 15-14, but the Rockets responded with a 6-0 surge of their own to take a seven-point advantage, 21-14.
- Kills from Caylee Sharkey and Granger put Toledo at set point, 24-18, and Kayla Ozanich secured the set victory with a termination.
SET TWO (25-23 Toledo)
- Northern Illinois took an early 9-5 lead off a string of kills and service aces.
- The Rockets got within three, 15-12, with a kill from Taylor Alt.
- The Huskies extended their lead to five, 20-15, on a service ace. Toledo responded with an 8-0 run with Grace Freiberger behind the service line. The run saw three kills from Sharkey, two from Granger and a block from Ozanich and Granger.
- Granger gave Toledo the set win off her fifth kill of the frame.
SET THREE (25-19 Toledo)
- The Rockets started the set on a 6-0 run, highlighted by a block from Ozanich and Hatkevich.
- Northern Illinois used a 6-1 surge of their own to get within one point, 8-7.
- Toledo pushed the lead to five, 12-7, thanks to kills from Sharkey and Granger.
- The Rockets stayed in front for the remainder of the set and led by as many as eight points at 24-16.
