2/1/2024 3:10:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The defending Mid-American Conference Champion Toledo men's tennis team will test their strength against defending GLIAC Champion Wayne State Warriors in the Rockets' home opener of 2024 at Shadow Valley Tennis Club on Friday, Feb. 2 at 1:00 p.m.

Friday's match is sponsored by Jersey Mike's and there will be free sandwiches for those fans who attend. UT will also host its annual Kids' Camp at 4:30 p.m. following the match.

"Wayne State is a Division II powerhouse who reached D-II National finals couple years ago," head coach Al Wermer said about this week's opponent. "They always compete hard and create lots of problems for us to try and solve."

Last Time on the Court
Despite falling to No.1 seed Ohio State last Wednesday, Toledo had an outstanding performance week. The Rockets battled Penn State in a six-hour match and pulled the 4-3 upset on Friday, before taking down Temple 5-2 the following afternoon.

Senior Pawit Sornlaksup went 2-1 from the top singles court and 2-0 with freshman Poonthong Komolpisut from the No. 1 doubles court. The Rockets' efforts swept the MAC Singles & Doubles Team of the Week honors.

Rockets in the Rankings
Sornlkausp maintains his No. 68 national ranking for another week after his program-record 45-match winning streak was ended last week in three sets by Ohio State's Cannon Kingsley. Sornlaksup shares the No. 4 record for career singles wins spot with Varsity T Hall of Famer Stjepan Sisko (2014-17) at 65.

Head Coach Al Wermer enters this week of competition with 321 career victories in his 27 years leading UT, the most by a Rocket coach.

About Wayne State
Wayne State was picked No. 8 in the Preseason ITA Division II Preseason Coaches Poll, after winning its third GLIAC Championship Tournament title and making it to the Quarterfinals of the 2023 NCAA DII Tournament. Cedric Drenth and Daniel Grey are the No.5 ranked doubles team, while Dom Spicer and Luke Laws are ranked No. 13 in the ITA among other DII pairs. The Warriors won 13 straight matches before No.3 seed Barry ended their run in the tournament and closed out the season with a 23-10 record and a 5-1 league mark.

Toledo last saw Wayne State at the Annual Everybody vs. Cancer Invitational (Sept. 22-24). The Rockets won the last dual match, 4-3, over the Warriors on Feb. 9, 2023, at home.
