TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team looks to maintain its undefeated home record this weekend as it welcomes Northern Illinois and 2022 MAC Champions Western Michigan to Shadow Valley Tennis Club. The Rockets will square off at 2:00 p.m. with the Huskies on Friday, before taking the court with the Broncos on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
About the Rockets (9-3, 1-0 MAC)
Toledo has won its last four matches, including its 4-3 conference-opener at Ball State last weekend. The Rockets won the necessary doubles team point and collected singles victories from
Pawit Sornlaksup,
Krzysztof Wetoszka and
Luis Kleinschnitz.
Sornlaksup has defended the No. 1 court for the last 32 matches and is 11-0 against MAC opponents since last January. Wetoszka has won his last four matches from the No. 2 court and his last three conference matches since last April.
About Northern Illinois (10-4, 2-0 MAC)
Northern Illinois is coming to the Glass City riding a three-match winning streak and back-to-back conference wins against Buffalo and Binghamton last weekend. NIU's No.1 doubles team of Cheng En Tsai and Mikael Vollback are 9-2 together, while Oliver Valentinsson has won his last seven matches from the top court. For his performance, Valentinsson was named this week's MAC Men's Singles Player of the Week.
The Rockets defeated the Huskies in both meetings during the 2022 season by 6-1 decisions on March 11 and April 8.
About Western Michigan (6-6, 2-0 MAC)
Western Michigan also topped Buffalo and Binghamton this past weekend as it opened MAC play. Four WMU players enter this weekend unscathed on conference play, Anton Arxhankin, Jackson Boone, Arjun Honnappa, and Peter Kuszynski. The Broncos' duo of Arxhankin and Fynn Lohse earned this week's MAC men's Doubles Team of the Week honors.
The 2022 MAC Championships finals was the last time the Rockets and Broncos went head-to-head. The Broncos took the title following a 4-2 decision in Kalamazoo, Mich. on April 24. WMU will face Ball State on Friday afternoon before making its way to Toledo on Sunday afternoon.
