Toledo Looks to Extend Seven-Game Winning Streak at Western Michigan

Rockets and Broncos tip off in Kalamazoo at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday

2/14/2023 12:44:00 PM

TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo women's basketball team will look to extend its season-long seven-game winning streak on Wednesday at Western Michigan. The Rockets (19-4, 10-2 MAC) and Broncos (10-13, 5-7 MAC) will tip off at 7:00 p.m. on ESPN+. in Kalamazoo.

Toledo is coming off a 71-58 win at Miami on Saturday. The lead changed hands several times in the first half of that contest, but Toledo took a 33-31 lead into halftime. The Rockets then came out firing to start the second half, quickly building a double-digit lead they would not relinquish. Quinesha Lockett led the way with 21 points and Nan Garcia tied a season-high with 15 points off the bench.

With the win, the Rockets remain one game out of first place in the Mid-American Conference standings. Bowling Green (11-1) and Ball State (11-1) have won 11 straight games and nine straight games, respectively, to keep their one-game cushion atop the conference. Toledo will play both Ball State (Feb. 25) and Bowling Green (March 4) near the end of the regular season.

Toledo won the previous meeting with Western Michigan on Jan. 4, defeating the Broncos 71-53 at home. Sophia Wiard was outstanding in that game, leading Toledo with 19 points, nine rebounds, and seven assists while going 6-for-6 from the free throw line.

Toledo returns home this Saturday, Feb. 18 vs. Eastern Michigan at 2:00 p.m. That game will be UT's annual "Rockets for the Cure" game, which will help benefit Susan G. Komen for the Cure of Northwest Ohio and the Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center. The Rockets encourage everyone in attendance to wear pink that day in support of breast cancer research.

Fans can purchase tickets for $13 apiece with $5 of each sale donated to the Susan G. Komen and Eleanor N. Dana Cancer Center. Please visit utrockets.com/RFCtix to purchase tickets.

Rocket Notes
  • Sophia Wiard ranks fourth in the country and leads the MAC with a 2.83 assist/turnover ratio. Wiard has led Toledo in assists or shared the team lead in 15 of 23 games this season and has led the MAC in assist/turnover ratio each of the last two seasons.
  • Quinesha Lockett enters Wednesday's game with 1,795 career points, which ranks sixth all-time in and is 80 points away from passing Naama Shafir (2008-13, 1,874 points) to move into fifth place all-time. Kim Knuth (1995-99) is Toledo's all-time leading scorer with 2,509 career points.
  • Lockett's 1,795 career points are the most among current MAC players, just ahead of Miami's Peyton Scott (1,764). Lockett ranks No. 34 among active D1 players in career points and has played in 113 career games, fewer than all but three of the players ranked ahead of her. Lockett and Scott are the only two MAC players in the Top 50 among active career scoring leaders.
  • Toledo is the best free throw shooting team in the league, ranking first in the MAC in free throw percentage (79.1%), free throws made per game (16.2), and free throw attempts (20.4). UT ranks seventh in the nation in free throw percentage and 10th in free throws made per game.
  • The Rockets are 31-3 over their last 34 regular season conference games.
  • The Rockets are second in the MAC and 16th in the country in assist-turnover ratio (1.25), and they also rank 15th nationally and first in the league in fewest turnovers per game (12.5). In last Wednesday's game vs. Buffalo, Toledo tallied a season-high 23 assists while committing just five turnovers.
  • UT has committed 12 or fewer turnovers in 15 of its 23 games, including six of the last seven. Toledo has committed fewer than 10 turnovers in a game three times.
  • As a team, the Rockets rank third in the MAC in scoring offense (74.0) and second in scoring defense (62.5), joining Bowling Green as the only teams in the MAC to rank in the top three in both categories. Toledo has held its opponents to fewer than 65 points in five of the last seven games.
  • The Rockets rank third in the MAC in scoring margin (+11.4) and have won five games by at least 20 points. UT has won 14 games by double digits.

About Western Michigan
