Toledo Takes Battle of I-75 with Five-Set Victory at Bowling Green

Rockets have won five of their last six MAC matches

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Toledo women's volleyball team captured its biggest win in Mid-American Conference play this season with a five-set victory at Bowling Green on Friday in the Battle of I-75.

The Rockets have now won five of their last six matches and improve to 5-1 in MAC play this season. They have also won two of their last three rivalry matches at the Stroh Center.

Bowling Green won the first set, 25-17, to take an early lead in the match before Toledo won a marathon second set by a score of 28-26. The Rockets needed less time to win the third set, 25-18, to take a 2-1 lead in the match, but BGSU won the fourth set, 25-22, to even the match and force a fifth set. Toledo dominated the final frame and won, 15-9, to win the Battle of I-75.

"What a great way to end a tough series of matches," head coach Jason Oliver said. "I am so happy with the total team effort we had tonight. We showed a toughness after the first set and found a way to win."

Senior Taylor Alt was terrific, tallying a season-high 23 kills to lead the way for Toledo. Fifth-year senior Ryann Jaqua added a match-high 26 digs, the fifth time in the last six matches she has accumulated at least 20 digs. Freshman Macy Hatkevich added a career-high 45 assists and 15 digs for her fourth double-double of the year.

Senior Jada Bouyer hit .538 and had a career-best 16 kills, while freshman Izzy Granger and fifth-year senior Rhyenne Filisi added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Filisi's 10 kills came on 11 attacks, giving her a .909 attack percentage, the second-highest in a match in program history for a player with at least 10 attack attempts. Granger and senior Abby Erickson both collected four blocks, tying for the most in the match.

Toledo returns home next weekend to host Buffalo for a pair of matches.

1st Set (25-17, Bowling Green)
The Rockets opened the match on a positive note with a service ace, and kept pace with the Falcons throughout the early stages of the first set. With the score tied at 8-8, though, Bowling Green embarked on an 11-3 run to take a commanding 19-11 lead. BGSU went on to win the first set, 25-17, to take a 1-0 lead in the match.

2nd Set (28-26, Toledo)
Bowling Green picked up right where it left off to begin the second set, taking a 6-1 lead. Undeterred, Toledo chipped away at the deficit until a 5-1 run tied the score at 14-14.The Rockets took their first lead of the set three points later on a service ace from Macy Hatkevich, but BGSU surged ahead to take a 23-19 advantage. With their backs against the wall, the Rockets responded by scoring five of the next six points to tie the score at 24-24. Both teams reached set point in their favor, but Taylor Alt and Jada Bouyer's back-to-back kills handed the second set to Toledo and tied the match at 1-1.

3rd Set (25-18, Toledo)
The Rockets came out firing to begin the third set, taking a 12-4 lead. The sizable lead didn't last long, however, as Bowling Green pulled within two, 17-15. Toledo's offense kicked it into high gear at the end of the third set, scoring five of the final six points to win, 25-18. All five points came on kills, and Izzy Granger tallied the final four UT kills in the third frame.

4th Set (25-22, Bowling Green)
The two rivals traded points early, but a 4-0 run by BGSU put them ahead, 8-5. The Falcons eventually grew their lead to as many as six, 19-13, and Toledo wasn't able to overcome the deficit. The fourth set finished with a final score of 25-22 to force a decisive fifth frame.

5th Set (15-9, Toledo)
The fifth set was never in serious doubt for Toledo, as it used an 8-1 run to take a 10-3 lead. Alt fittingly provided the winning point to cap a 15-9 fifth-set win. The Rockets hit .368 in the final set and held the Falcons to a .095 attack percentage.
