TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis program announced their schedule for the 2022-23 season today.
"This type of challenging national exposure is a top reason that players want to be Rockets," head coach
Al Wermer said, who is entering his 26th season at the helm. "We train, we grow, and then we compete at the highest levels. This fall slate in particular, includes the Milwaukee Classic, Tulsa All-Americans, and even our very strong ITA Regional. These give us three immediate events where the sky's the limit."
The fall slate will begin the weekend of Sept. 16-18 with the UT Rockets Fall Invitational. Some Rockets will also participate in the Milwaukee Tennis Classic in Milwaukee, Wis. that weekend. A select group will then head to Tulsa, Okla. the first week of October to participate in the week-long Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-American Championships. Toledo will host the Everybody Vs. Cancer Invitational on Oct. 14-16 prior to heading to Champaign, Ill. for the ITA Midwest Regionals (Oct. 20-24).
The Rockets will get a taste of conference competition at the Mid-American Conference Indoors hosted by Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Nov. 4-6.
Toledo will then end the fall season at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) M15 competition in East Lansing, Mich. from Nov. 11-18.
"Our dual non-conference season is loaded with several Big Ten teams including behemoth Ohio State, and a handful of others who are also at the top of their respective conference like Dayton, Youngstown State, Wayne State, and Xavier," Wermer added. "If things fall our way, those matches will help prepare us for another great MAC season and run at a MAC Championship in late April."
Toledo's first home dual match is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 14 vs. Boston University at Shadow Valley Tennis Club. The Rockets' non-conference home slate includes Youngstown State, Wayne State, Duquesne, and Chicago State. The road matchups are comprised of Indiana (Jan. 15), Ohio State (Jan. 19), IUPUI (Feb. 4), Dayton (Feb. 11), Xavier (Feb. 12), and Purdue (Feb. 26).
Wermer and his team will host its Alumni Day in Orlando, Fla. at the USTA National Campus.
Upon their return, the Rockets will begin MAC dual competition beginning March 11 vs. Ball State in Muncie, Ind. All MAC programs will play each other twice this season, one home and one away match.
The 2023 MAC Men's Tennis Championships will be hosted by 2022 champion Western Michigan on April 22-23 in Kalamazoo, Mich.
The NCAA Championships will take place in May, with the team competition scheduled for May 5-7, and the individual competition scheduled for May 22-27. The locations and times for the postseason is yet to be determined.
