TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo men's tennis team celebrated its 2021-22 season and handed out a handful of awards at its year-end team banquet.

The Rockets concluded the 2021-22 season with a second-place regular-season finish in the Mid-American Conference, and a second-place finish at the 2022 MAC Men's Tennis Championships on April 24. Toledo posted an overall record of 15-9, 7-3 mark in MAC play, and had three individual champions at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) sanctioned MAC Indoors on Nov. 5-7, 2021 in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Most Valuable Player – Pawit Sornlaksup
Sornlaksup was named team MVP by his teammates for a fantastic first season with the Rockets. The sophomore transfer was named First-Team All-MAC, MAC Player of the Year, and was named to the All-MAC Tournament Team following a 22-2 record (12-0 MAC) at the No. 1 court. He ended the season on a 22-match winning streak and a combined 4-0 record in singles and doubles at the MAC Tournament in Kalamazoo, Mich. on April 23-24.

Most Improved Player – Adam Kovac
A Second-Team All-MAC honoree, Kovac was named Most Improved Player by his teammates following his 10-13 (6-3 MAC) performance at the No. 2 singles court. Kovac made an appearance at the ITA All-American Championships (Oct. 2-3, 2021), and was one of three individual champions for the Rockets at the MAC Indoors. Kovac defeated Ball State's Chris Adams, Western Michigan's Arjun Honnappa and Buffalo's Simon Wibler to win the Flight 2 Singles Bracket. Kovac and doubles partner Wojciech Szczeny went 2-1 in the Flight 2 Doubles.

Toughness Award – Adam Kovac and Pawit Sornlaksup

Brian Engel Award – Pawit Sornlaksup
This award voted on by a committee based on a student-athlete's performance, academics, leadership, sportsmanship and community involvement.

"This team has a special swagger," head coach Al Wermer said. "It's a group that's very tight-knit, tough, and they go about their business the right way. We talk a lot about working with intention all week – not just on match day. Pawit and Adam are huge leaders in this preparation mindset."
