TOLEDO, Ohio – The Toledo baseball team will look to keep rolling this weekend when it takes a break from Mid-American Conference play to host Austin Peay for three games at Scott Park.
Friday's series opener will begin at 3:00 p.m., while first pitch for the games on Saturday and Sunday is set for 1:00 p.m.
The Rockets (22-17, 16-11 MAC) hold a 3.5-game lead over Ohio (18-17, 10-10) for third place in the MAC standings. The Bobcats have not played a MAC game since taking three out of four at Eastern Michigan on April 15-17, but they will visit Miami this weekend for four games.
Following this weekend's series, Toledo will host Miami on Tuesday, May 3 at 3:00 p.m. The makeup game was rescheduled from March 27 and will be televised locally on BCSN and streamed live on ESPN3.
Last Time Out
Toledo utterly dominated its four-game series against Eastern Michigan this past weekend, winning all four contests and outscoring the Eagles 46-15.
Highlighting the weekend were a pair of run-rule victories on Saturday and Sunday. The Rockets won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, 21-7, and were fueled by a marathon 14-run second inning. They then won by run-rule again on Sunday, 15-5, after
Garret Pike drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the seventh.
Toledo's offensive numbers were mind-boggling, hitting .434, slugging .752, and reaching base at a .497 clip. The Rockets tagged EMU for 21 extra-base hits, including nine home runs, and walked 17 times. The pitching staff was just as effective, striking out 25 while walking just seven and holding the Eagles to a .214 team batting average.
Rocket Notes
- The Rockets are currently riding a seven-game winning streak, their longest since the 2011 season when they won 11 games in a row.
- Toledo's 14-run inning on Saturday was one of just seven instances this season of a Division I team scoring 14 or more runs in a single inning. The Rockets' opponent this weekend, Austin Peay, was on the wrong end of a 17-run inning at SIU Edwardsville on Saturday, the most runs a team has scored in an inning this season.
- The 21 runs UT scored on Saturday were the Rockets' most since scoring 21 in a game against Buffalo in 2017.
- When Jeron Williams was named MAC Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday, he became the fourth Rocket to earn a weekly award from the MAC this season, joining Kyle Jones, Garret Pike, and Mason Sykes.
- Toledo ranks second in the league in strikeouts (222) in MAC play. UT boasts two of the top five strikeout pitchers in the MAC in conference play: Kyle Jones (1st, 57) and Connor Brandon (5th, 42).
- Jones has been a driving force behind Toledo's strong pitching, leading the MAC in both strikeouts (81) and innings pitched (64.2) while sitting in fifth place in ERA (3.90). Jones has thrown at least six innings in all 10 outings this season and has struck out at least eight on seven occasions.
- Jones' 84 strikeouts put him within striking distance of the single-season strikeout record, currently held by Jeremy Griffiths (102, 1999).
- Jeron Williams has been on fire as of late, tallying multiple hits in each of his last five games and he's scored a run in eight straight games.
- Mason Sykes has already exceeded his home run total from last season with 11. He is tied for first in the MAC in home runs this year, one of four players with at least 11 dingers. He is four home runs away from tying the single-season record of 15 that is held by three people (Chris Meyers, Ross Adolph, and Mike Ernst).
- Three Rockets are hitting above .300 in conference play: Garret Pike (.371), Jeron Williams (.357), and John Servello (.341). All three are also slugging above .500 and are getting on base at a rate of .400 or higher in league play.
- Servello's 13 total stolen bases this season are already the most by a Rocket since Tyler Grogg stole 26 bags in 2014. Jeron Williams is close behind with 12 thefts.
About Austin Peay
Austin Peay brings a 16-26 overall record into this weekend and has lost four of its last five games. The Governors had a difficult weekend at SIU Edwardsville, suffering a three-game sweep while allowing 54 runs. Offensively, Austin Peay boasts five .300 hitters with Jack Alexander leading the way. The senior catcher is hitting .364 with nine home runs and 43 RBIs while slugging .652. The Govs rank fourth in the country in doubles (101) and senior UTIL Gino Avros ranks second in the nation with 20 two-baggers.
