Toledo Drops Doubleheader at Western Michigan

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – Toledo softball dropped both ends of a doubleheader vs. Western Michigan in Kalamazoo, Mich. on Sunday. The Rockets fell 8-0 in the opening game followed by a 2-1 loss in the series finale. Toledo won the first game of the series on Saturday, 5-4.

In the first game on Sunday, the Broncos scored at least one more run in each inning, including two home runs, to take an 8-0 run-rule victory. Trailing 1-0 after one inning, Toledo loaded the bases with one out in the second, but could not convert when the next two batters struck out. The Broncos went on to score seven more runs. The game ended in the fifth when WMU scored off an RBI single and a game-ending sacrifice fly.

In the second game, WMU scored in the opening inning off an RBI single and again in the fourth on an RBI double. Freshman Emma Morgan reached home on a throwing error in the sixth to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Rockets had the tying run on base in the seventh when Sydney McKeever walked with one out and stole second one batter later. But the rally ended when Bri Robeson grounded out to the shortstop. Freshman Sophia Knight (4-5) went the distance on the mound for Toledo, allowing five hits and striking out six.

The Rockets (8-15, 1-2 MAC) will welcome Buffalo to Scott Park this weekend in its home-opening series on Friday-Saturday, March 25-26. First pitch is scheduled for Friday at 3:00 p.m.

GAME 1 – Western Michigan 8, Toledo 0
  • Western Michigan took a one-run lead in the first off an RBI double to center field.
  • Toledo loaded the bases with one out on a single by Arika Reed, a walk and a WMU error, but failed to score.
  • WMU added two runs in the second off a throwing error and an RBI double to increase the lead 3-0.
  • WMU hit a solo homer in the third and added a two-run homer in the fourth increase its lead to 6-0.
  • The Broncos scored om an RBI single and a sacrifice fly in the fifth to end the game by run rule, 8-0.
GAME 2 – Western Michigan 2, Toledo 1
  • WMU scored the lead run on an RBI single with one out in the first.
  • The Broncos got back-to-back two-out doubles in the fourth to take a 2-0 lead.
  • Dayna Denner led off the sixth inning with a double down the right field line. Emma Morgan came into the game to pinch run and scored on a throwing error to make it a 2-1 game.
  • Sydney McKeever walked with one out in the seventh and stole second one batter later. But the rally ended when Bri Robeson grounded out to the shortstop.
