Rockets Return to Road with Trip to Northern Iowa on Tuesday

TOLEDO, Ohio - Toledo (5-3) makes a quick return to the road when it travels to Cedar Falls, Iowa on Tuesday, Dec. 6 to face Northern Iowa (3-4, 1-1 MVC). Tip-off time is set for 7:30 p.m. CT in the McLeod Center with streaming on ESPN+.

The Rockets will be looking to bounce back from Saturday's 80-73 setback at George Mason. The contest was tied at 65-65 with 2:52 remaining, but the Patriots went on a 6-0 run to pull away for the win.  JT Shumate topped Toledo with 20 points despite playing just 26 minutes due to foul trouble. Setric Millner Jr. added 16 points and eight rebounds, with RayJ Dennis contributing 10 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

Toledo is ranked 12th nationally with a MAC-best 85.1 ppg and also leads the MAC with a 37.2 3PTFG%, 15.0 apg and a 1.33 assist/turnover ratio.

Individually, Shumate ranks third in the MAC in scoring with 18.9 ppg and sixth nationally with a 95.7 free-throw percentage (22-of-23). Dennis also appears in the national rankings at No. 14 with a MAC-high 6.0 apg. Millner ranks 10th in the conference with 15.8 ppg. He is also third with a team-high 8.1 rpg, with Shumate ranking second with 1.5 bpg.

Northern Iowa is 3-0 at home this season after posting Saturday's 72-55 win over Evansville. The Panthers and Rockets have one common opponent, Richmond. Toledo posted a 90-67 home win over the Spiders, and UNI dropped a 68-55 road decision.

Sophomore guard Bowen Born leads UNI with 21.7 ppg, 2.9 apg and 3.3 three-point field goals per game. Sophomore forward Tytan Anderson is averaging 13.4 ppg and a team-high 9.9 rpg.

Northern Iowa leads 1-0. The Rockets and Panthers have met once. UNI posted an 84-81 (OT) home win on Nov. 14, 2012. Juice Brown (23 pts.), Dominique Buckley (19 pts) and Rian Pearson (18 pts.) led UT in scoring.

TEAM TIDBITS
•  Toledo was ranked No. 9 in last week's CollegeInsiders.com poll. Kent State is the only other MAC team in the rankings at No. 5.
•  The Rockets have scored 90 or more points on three occasions, including 112 points vs. Oakland to match their most points ever scored under Coach Kowalczyk.
•  Toledo has shot over 80 percent from the free-throw line in five of eight games.
•  The Rockets have committed nine or fewer turnovers in five of eight contests.
•  Toledo is the only MAC school to win 13 or more league games four of last five years.

ROCKETS IN THE MAC RANKINGS
•  Toledo leads the MAC with 85.1 ppg, over seven points better than Ohio (77.8).
•  The Rockets are also first with a 37.2 3PTFG%, 15.0 apg, a 1.33 assist/turnover ratio, and fewest turnovers per game (11.3).
•  UT ranks second with a 48.1 FG%, 76.9 FT% and a plus-2.8 turnover margin.
•  The Rockets are third with 7.8 spg.
•  Toledo is the only school to have three representatives among the MAC's Top 15 scoring leaders — JT Shumate (18.9/3rd), RayJ Dennis (17.6/6th), and Setric Millner Jr. (15.8 ppg/10th).
•  Dennis leads the MAC with 6.0 apg and a 3.2 assist/turnover ratio.
•  Shumate ranks first in the MAC with a 95.7 FT%, second with 1.5 bpg and fourth with a 58.0 FG%. He is only person among the top five FG% leaders with at least 100 shots taken.
•  Millner Jr is third with 8.1 rpg and ninth with an 85.7 FT%.
•  Dante Maddox Jr. is sixth in the MAC with a team-best 46.7 three-point FG%.
 
POST TOUCHES
•  RayJ Dennis has scored in double digits in every game this season (17 or more in six) after ending the 2021-22 season by scoring in double digits in a career-high 14 straight games during which he had a 51.9 FG% and scored 14.0 ppg.
•  JT Shumate has a team-high five 20-point outings this year.
•  Setric Millner Jr. has three 20-point outings as well as two double-doubles in his first eight games this season. He leads the Rockets with a career-high 8.1 rpg and ranks third in team scoring with 15.8 ppg.

     Toledo will return home on Saturday, Dec. 10 to face Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference foe Canisius (2-6, 0-2 MAAC).Tip-off time is set for 2:00 p.m. in Savage Arena.
