Rockets Topple Broncos in Four Sets

KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Toledo women's volleyball team defeated Western Michigan in four sets on Saturday to earn a weekend split against the Broncos.

The Rockets (13-6, 6-2 MAC) avenged Friday's loss at WMU (13-8, 5-4 MAC) by hitting .293 to win Saturday's contest.

"That was a tough weekend for sure," head coach Jason Oliver said. "I am proud of the team and how they regrouped to find our game again on day two. To get a win on the road means a lot to us. The team will learn and grow because of such great competition."

One day after recording her 1,000th career kill, junior Taylor Alt led the Rockets with 21 terminations and hit .349 while adding 11 digs, her fifth double-double of the year. Junior Sina Uluave contributed 12 kills and 12 digs while senior Ryann Jaqua (14 digs) and junior Claire Eiden (12 digs) cracked double digits in digs as well. Senior Rhyenne Filisi had a productive match, collecting nine kills and seven blocks, and junior Payton Morman paced the offense with 46 assists.

Toledo will play at home three times next week, welcoming Ball State on Wednesday before hosting Northern Illinois over the weekend.

1st Set (25-13, Toledo)
Uluave started the match off with a kill to give UT the first point of the day. Things only got better from there for the Midnight Blue and Gold, as they jumped out to a 13-4 advantage over the Broncos. Toledo continued to pile on and would go on to win 25-13 to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Alt and Uluave both tallied five terminations in the first set.

2nd Set (25-22, Western Michigan)
Toledo started off the second set quickly as well, scoring the first three points to take an early lead. The Rockets extended their lead to 16-10, and looked to be in a good position to go up 2-0 in the match before WMU rallied. The Broncos used an 8-3 run to take a 19-18 lead and would not trail for the remainder of the set. Toledo did manage to tie the score at 20-20, but could not get any closer before losing 25-22 to even the match at 1-1.

3rd Set (25-15, Toledo)
The Rockets' offense led the way in the third set, a 25-15 win that put them up 2-1 in the match. They hit an astonishing .636 (15-1-22) in the third stanza and led wire-to-wire to win. Alt was outstanding, registering six kills on seven attacks, and Vance was a perfect, adding three kills on three attacks.

4th Set (25-18, Toledo)
Western Michigan led for much of the first half of the fourth set and held a 14-11 lead before the Rockets took control. Toledo rattled off 10 straight points to completely flip the script and take a commanding 21-14 lead. The final result was never in doubt from that point on, and Morman provided the clinching point with a kill to give the Rockets a four-set win.
