FORT MYERS, Fla. – The University of Toledo women's tennis team finished its season-opening weekend with a 4-2 win over Liberty at the Florida Gulf Coast Weekend Kickoff on Saturday. It is the first win of 2022 for the Rockets, who lost to a highly respected Florida Gulf Coast squad in their opener on Friday.
"I am so proud of the heart the team played with today," head coach
Tracy Mauntler said. "Liberty is such a good team and it felt great to come away with the win."
The Rockets won four of the five singles matches, including two comeback victories on the No.2 court by junior
Sloane Teske and No.5 by senior
Patricia Panta. Teske lost the first set, won the second and then came out victorious over Maria Parra with a 7-5 margin in the third. Panta and Maretha Burger split closely fought battles in the first two sets before Panta pulled away in the third (4-6, 7-5, 6-1).
The Flames swept the Rockets in doubles play.
"I could see the experience from last year shining through during the singles matches," Mauntler said. "The belief this team has in each other is special."
The Rockets will head back to Toledo for their home-opener at Twos Athletic Club with Youngstown State on Saturday, Jan. 29 at 1:00 p.m.
