TOLEDO, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's tennis team opens up Mid-American Conference play this weekend with a trip to Miami on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
"The team is excited to get this conference season started," head coach Tracy Mauntler said. "Because we didn't play any MAC competition last year, the motivation is even higher. Miami is the defending MAC champs and so I expect a battle for sure."
The Rockets were supposed to visit Buffalo on Friday, but that match was postponed due to roster issues with UB stemming from positive COVID-19 tests and subsequent contact tracing. That match has been rescheduled for Tuesday, April 6.
Last Time Out
Toledo played its first outdoors home match of the year on Wednesday, defeating Oakland 7-0.
Both Rocket doubles tandems were victorious against the Golden Grizzlies. Sophomore Sloane Teske and freshman Julia Kuszynski won on the top court, 6-2, and sophomore Laura Morera and senior Patricia Panta defeated their Oakland counterparts on the No. 2 court, 6-0. Due to the Golden Grizzlies only having five players available to play on Wednesday, no match was played on the No. 3 doubles court and Toledo was awarded a win by default. The same ruling was applied to the No. 6 singles court.
The Rockets won all five singles matches to close out the 7-0 victory. Teske and Kuszynski finished their singles contests first, winning on courts No. 2 and 4, respectively. Freshman Shalini Tallamraju won on court No. 5, and she was quickly followed by fellow freshman Cassie Alcala on the top court. Junior Elieen Carney closed out the afternoon with a win on the No. 3 court. After winning the first set 6-1, Carney found herself behind 5-4 in the second, but battled back to win 7-5 and close out the Rockets' victory.Â
Cassie Alcala Named MAC Singles Player of the Week
Freshman Cassie Alcala was named Mid-American Conference Singles Player of the Week, the conference office announced on Thursday.
Alcala went 1-1 in singles play last week to improve her season record to 5-2. In last Wednesday's match at USF, Alcala won her fifth straight singles contest (6-4, 4-6, 6-4) for her third victory on the top singles court this season. Alcala has played on the No. 1 singles court in six of Toledo's eight matches this year. The freshman from Pickerington, Ohio was victorious in singles play on Wednesday against Oakland, improving her season record to 6-2.
