Jone Ibanez fights off six match points to clinch the 4-3 victory in a third set tiebreaker
TOLEDO, Ohio – Facing a 5-1 deficit in a decisive third set, Toledo junior Jone Ibanez fought off six match points on the No. 3 singles court to help Toledo women's tennis secure a come-from-behind 4-3 victory over Western Michigan on Friday afternoon.
The Rockets (8-7, 3-1 MAC) were down 3-1 in the match after Western Michigan took the doubles point and wins on the No. 5 and 6 singles courts. UT's lone point came from freshman Isabella Barretto who fired off a three-set win on the No. 2 singles court.
JJ Scholten kicked off the comeback as she earned a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 win on the No. 1 court to cut into WMU's lead. Sophomore Neha Guru followed up with a 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 win on the No. 4 court to even the match, 3-3.
As Guru clinched her match win, Ibanez was down 5-1 in the third set of her match on the No. 3 court. The junior fought off six match points and won a tiebreaker, 9-7, to clinch the match victory and pick up the Rockets' third MAC win of the season. Both Scholten and Ibanez picked up their third wins of conference play on Friday.
Quoting Head Coach Tracy Mauntler
"This was one of the biggest comebacks in the history of the program. We played very gritty at No. 1 through 4 singles which was what I asked for today. For Jo Jo (Jone Ibanez) to be down 1-5 in the third and bring it all the way back to clinch for us, it's a testament to her belief in herself and how much this team fights for each other. I am so incredibly proud of the squad and the way they play with their heart today."
