OXFORD, Ohio – The University of Toledo women's tennis team opened up conference play on Sunday with a big 5-2 win over Miami in Oxford.
Â
"The girls showed so much heart today," head coach Tracy Mauntler. "Miami is extremely talented and always at the top of the MAC. My team brought the best out of each other today; they play for their teammates. They displayed so much fire during the singles, and I couldn't be prouder."
Â
The Rockets claim their first win over Miami since 2007.
Â
The defending MAC Champion RedHawks started the afternoon by winning the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead in the match. Freshman Cassie Alcala and junior Christina Fuller were able to defeat their Miami counterparts on the No. 3 court, but the RedHawks won on the top two courts.
Â
Singles play was a different story, as Toledo won five of six matches to take down the RedHawks 5-2. Sophomore Sloane Teske was victorious on the No. 2 court to tie the match at 1-1, then Miami retook the lead with a win on the No. 5 court. The Rockets won the next four matches to win their first MAC match of the year. Alcala improved to 7-2 in singles play this year with her three-set victory on the top court, then fellow freshmen Julia Kuszynski  and Shalini Tallamraju won courts No. 4 and 6, respectively, to go up 4-2. Junior Eileen Carney ended the afternoon with a hard-fought victory on the No. 3 court to send the Rockets home with a 5-2 win.
Â
The Rockets return home next weekend to host Northern Illinois on Friday and Bowling Green on Sunday.
