Toledo Falls at Kent State, 6-3

Kent, Ohio— The Toledo baseball team dropped its series opener at Kent State on Friday night, 6-3.

The Rockets scored first, pushing a run across in the top of the first, but wouldn't hold the lead again during the game. Kent State scored once in the bottom of the first to tie the game, then a three-run third inning for the Golden Flashes gave them the lead for good.

Junior Doug Smith started for the Midnight Blue and Gold and tossed 4.2 innings, while sophomore Bryce Davis was terrific out of the bullpen. He contributed 3.1 scoreless innings and struck out three.

At the plate, sophomore Trace Hatfield went 2-for-4, and the runs were driven in by freshman Darryn Davis, freshman Ryan Thompson, and sophomore David Jeffers.
Toledo and Kent State resume their weekend series on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.

How it Happened
  • The Rockets did some two-out damage in the top of the first to take an early lead. Senior Brad  Boss, Hatfield, and Davis tallied three straight base hits that led to the first run of the game and put UT ahead, 1-0.
  • Kent State tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom of the first with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Golden Flashes plated three runs in the fourth to take a 4-1 lead. Another sac fly gave them the lead, then a couple of run-scoring hits pushed the lead to three runs.
  • Sophomore Zach Schwartzenberger walked to lead off the top of the fourth then stole second, and Thompson drove him in with a line drive into the gap in left-center field to make it 4-2. Jeffers followed that up by driving in Thompson to put Toledo within one, 4-3.
  • A leadoff double for KSU in the bottom of the fourth led to another run, as an RBI single followed two batters later to put the score at 5-3. A sacrifice fly in the fifth pushed it to 6-3, which would hold as the final score.
